BJJ Training is Part of Our MMA Classes
Posener’s Pankration/MMA teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) as a core part of our grappling-focused training system. With more than 37 years of teaching (at the time of this writing) in Vancouver, we're one of the city’s pioneering martial arts schools with world-class instruction. We’ve refined our No-Gi BJJ program to help students build real-world grappling skill, build confidence, personal growth, and a deep understanding of the art.
Our BJJ training emphasizes effective techniques drawn from No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling, takedowns, positional control, transitions, submissions, and the strategies that tie everything together. We train for self-defense, fitness, competition, or developing mental discipline. No matter your goals, our approach is the same which helps you evolve at your own pace while strengthening your confidence on and off the mats.
Guided by a long-standing traditional philosophy of technical excellence and personal development, we constantly refine our curriculum to help each student reach their highest-level and full potential. Our Our MMA classes Vancouver blend structured learning with controlled techniques, integrating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a foundational part of our grappling curriculum.

What is Jiu-Jitsu?
Jiu-Jitsu is often translated as ‘The Gentle Art’. Judo is translated as the ‘Gentle Way’. These translations are not fully descriptive of these arts. Jiu Jitsu is often thought of as an art the uses throws, holds, and submissions to subdue an opponent. The ‘Jitsu’ suffix following the prefix ‘Ju’ refers to a more fighting orientation for combat effectiveness. The ‘do’ suffix translates to the art being a ‘way’ of life, and a combination of fighting skills and personal development skills. Of course, there is a blending of these perspectives in actual practice and application. Both ‘Jitsu’ and ‘Do’ have combative, personal development and sport objectives. We also have a goal of developing the combative and personal development skills to the highest levels.
My personal background, which started 46 years ago, at the time of this writing, employed a mixed style approach, which included Japanese Jiu Jitsu, which had a self-defense orientation. We do employ some of those tactics. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an evolution of the Japanese method to be more effective in free fighting. We always give respect to the origins of the arts.
