Gio Platon wins the BFL Title on Saturday November 17 ’18 at the Hardrock Casino. What a fight?. Both fighters came in ripped, ready and well prepared. It was clear both fighters wanted the belt. After round 3, due the scoring disclosure, which was new with BFL, Gio was up 30 – 27. The fight was largely a good stand up exchange with wrestling and position work on the ground. Both fighters were dangerous in striking and going for it. Gio was able to use his Muay Thai skills against Mitch, who in the stand up realm was working to impose his boxing game. I feel Gio was able to vary his attacks and establish the stand up battle. Mitch did initiate some takedowns and cage work but Gio was able to reverse the cage work and get a reversal himself and get top position. However, after Gio gets a takedown, not to be outdone, Mitch goes for a takedown but Gio was able to catch a guillotine choke, which the referee acknowledged as dangerous. Gio was also able to land a couple of solid takedowns and worked hard in the transitions to escape or get top position.
In round 4. Gio goes for a takedown a little bit earlier in the round. and was able to finish the fight was some strong, clean, efficient ground and pound. It was a good fight for both fighters and both fighters conducted themselves well. Well done. Gio is the new BFL MMA champion.

Francis Tiapis was also prepared to get the BFL Title in a higher weight class. The result was not the desired outcome. I would say, conservatively, on fight day that Indrop was 15 pounds heavier than Francis who walks around at 118- 120 pounds. Francis never gives up and came to fight. However, after the 5 rounds, Francis loses a unanimous decision. His opponent came out confident in striking and imposed pressure on Francis pinning him against the cage for long periods and securing some takedowns and positions. Francis was able to battle many of the positions on the cage and on the ground but his opponent had the edge on that night. Francis battled the whole time and was able to get the guard back and tried to attack from the bottom. The fight did go the distance. Francis is looking forward to improvement and moving forward in his art.

I would like to thank our awesome instructor team for this fight, George Kassimatis, Costa Rojas, Hayden Francis, Gus Rodgriguez, Lance Kawi, Jonathan Chan and everyone who supported the team.
In both victory and defeat, the goal is to keep improving to our fullest potential; equanimity of spirit. With that focus progress happens. In victory, avoid complacency and overconfidence; and in defeat avoid negativity. I am confident we can focus on the positives. Gio and Francis are on an awesome journey of championship fighting and personal development to pursue their full potential. Great work. Take a little time to enjoy the table of success and then move forward. OSU!
