Gio Defends- 1st rnd KO, Oguzhan wins UD- Posener’s MMA Vancouver

At the BFL 63 MMA event on Saturday September 21 ’19, Gio Platon wins by KO in the first round at the 23 second mark for his required amateur mma title defense prior to turning pro officially against an experienced highly touted champion from California. Also, Oguzhan Yalcin wins his 3rd mma cage fight by unanimous decision prior to his moving up in mma class for Posener’s MMA Vancouver.
Firstly, I would like to describe Gio’s fight. Gio landed a straight right early in the round after his opponent landed a shot, leg kick, as is my recollection. Then Gio turned the spirit on to maintain the edge and landed his right hand clean, which dropped his opponent and he followed up with a flurry of hammerfists, which caused the referee to intervene and stop the fight. Gio retains his MMA title.

From left to right, our beloved George Kassimatis, who has been at our school for over 20 years, having had a successful championship professional mma career himself. George teaches at an elite level all aspects of mixed martial artst to regular students, fighters and fitness enthusiasts. Dan Golkar of Scorpion MMA has been welcoming, open minded and promoting a group win/win concept to help fighters be their best and compete successfully at the highest level professionally. Dan has worked with countless top professionals in MMA with a positive spirit. Next is myself with a smiley face. Besides me is Richard Fast the Cage side manager who checks the fighters before they get in the cage and he is always, in my experience, attentive to their mental, physical and emotional state and is an encouraging force helping them do their best as they enter the cage, which is no small feat. Besides Gio is Tristan Connely the owner of Checkmat MMA Gym. Tristan recently took a fight at UFC Vancouver on 5 days notice in a higher weight division against a more experienced opponent and shocked the world earning a $100K bonus and getting major recognition. The Checkmat group and affiliates have many top professionals working together to be their best and reach their potential. Also thanks to the other instructors and supporters, Costa Rojas, Hayden Francis, Emilio Ditrocchio and many others.
Gio has grown tremendously as a fighter and a person over the last 7 or 8 years at our academy. He has an explosive style that is certainly going to be appealing as he now gets ready to turn professional. Gio has dynamic striking, explosive takedowns, good top control, excellent strength and conditioning, coordination and athletics, and he is improving in all areas. He is motivated to do his best and challenge his potential.

Oguzhan Yalcin wins by unanimous decision, 30 – 27, 30 -27 and 29 -28 against a more experienced in mma opponent. Of course, we know Oguzhan can wrestle and in the 9 months or so of MMA Vancouver. Coming from Turkey, Oguzhan is looking forward to pursuing his mma dreams. Oguzhan is making good improvements in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu. The 3 round fight had all elements and many similarities. On the feet Oguzhan did well striking landing shots and taking some shots. Oguzhan blended his striking with both offensive and defensive takedowns. On the ground Oguzhan was able to land some ground and pound, pass guard for some moments and posture effectively in the guard against, I believe an opponent with some experience in Jiu-Jitsu. He was able to fight his fight and get a clean win. Great work Oguzhan in the cage and balancing training and work responsibilities. Brandon is an excellent competitor with great coaching and we appreciate his positive competitive spirit.
